We’re so happy to welcome a seasoned recruiting consultant to our ranks here at Guild Talent, Justin Shotwell. We sat down with him to pick his brain on what got him into recruiting and how he’s evolved.
Q: What got you into the recruiting industry?
A: My mom. She’s been in HR her whole career and is the ultimate role model. I’ve always been passionate and energized by working with people, so recruiting was a natural fit.
Q: How have you evolved since you first started in staffing/recruiting?
A: Wow, that’s a big question! I’ve grown a tremendous amount both personally and professionally since I started my career. To keep it short, I think my biggest evolution is my ability to provide value to candidates throughout their job search. I’m lucky and excited every time a person wants to hop on a call with me and my ability to ensure they’re getting something of value from that time has grown significantly during my career.
Q: What excited you the most when coming to work at Guild Talent?
A: First, I was very excited about getting to work with Jamie, Marissa and the Guild Team. I was also really looking forward to getting back to partnering with exec teams and bringing my consultative approach to their recruiting process.
Q: Describe your first few months at Guild Talent – goals, challenges, news, etc.
A: First few months have been an absolute blast. Have partnered with some incredible clients, had a few accepted offers and have spoken with a lot of candidates! It’s not really a challenge, given it’s a positive for job seekers, but this is a highly competitive job market. Candidates have more opportunities than we’ve ever seen and it’s up to recruiters and clients to meet the challenge of hiring top talent.
Q: What are your short and long-term goals within the company?
A: Short term: I want to continue providing value for job seekers and consulting with our clients on how to best hire top talent. Long-term: I want to help develop, grow and train the Guild Talent team so we can partner with more clients and support more candidates.
Q: What do you love most about working at Guild Talent?
A: Partnering with some of the most talented candidates and clients in the world. I get to have amazing conversations about people’s careers on a daily basis and truly learn something new everyday. It’s awesome.
Q: What roles and functional areas are you focused on?
A: We don’t have specific areas of focus, meaning I can work on any role, but my first few months have been focused on Finance, HR/People, Sales and Strategy/Ops.
Q: What can you hang your hat on so far since joining?
A: Being a trusted advisor to our clients and candidates.
Q: What kind of advice would you give someone looking to get into recruiting?
A: Realize that getting into recruiting means you’re actively responsible for people’s careers. It’s an amazing job, it’s difficult at times, but always try to do what’s best for the candidate.
